I first met Lubelski at the last Dirtybird Campout West, when he played our Thursday night opening party. Since then I have continued to hear his name buzzing throughout the LA warehouse scene. With strong ties to one of my favorite crews, Desert Hearts, it is no surprise Lubelski's music is heavily focused around the groove with an extra bit of weirdness.
I’m excited to welcome Lubelski to THE BIRDHOUSE and to learn a little more about him in our Questionnaire. Listen to this week’s episode and read the interview below!
How did your music career get started in earnest?
Well, I was born and then got stuck in the world of loops. The everlasting groove of House Music has been the only thing keeping me going since.
Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?
I was born and raised in LA, but went to school in Santa Cruz. The West Coast has always had an influence on me.
How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?
I’m in a perpetual state of existential crisis. I can’t remember a single day that has gone by where i haven’t woken up and thought to myself, ‘hey, just quit making music already, become a vegan chef, stop making beats and start making beets’. What sucks is I’m pretty mediocre at cooking. So I guess I’ll just stick to music.
What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?
My Vermona DRM MKIII. It makes some pretty wild percussion sounds.
When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?
Moby, Fatboy Slim, and Smash Mouth.
When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?
I start a new track.
Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?
In the kitchen, cooking beets.
Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?
I don’t want to toot my own horn but I am unnaturally good at Sudoku, so toot toot mother effers.
Favorite and least favorite colors?
I love the color Black and hate the color Orange.
Favorite and least favorite words?
Ironically enough, my favorite word is ‘favorite’ and my least favorite word is ‘least.’
The Kookaburra. It makes one of the craziest sounds I’ve ever heard.
Favorite board game?
Chess! All day, baby.
Favorite guilty pleasure food?
Bagel, Lox, and Cream Cheese with a spicy dill pickle on the side.
Favorite guilty pleasure song?
The Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife Are Some Jive Ass Slippers by Charles Mingus
German or Detroit techno?
Festival, club or illegal warehouse?
Fuck the festival, marry the warehouse, kill the club. Did I answer this one right?
Biggie or Tupac?
Sorry California, but I’m going with Biggie on this one.
Star Wars or Star Trek?
The force is strong with me, for sure.
Exercise or Netflix?
They both make me feel good.
