THE BIRDHOUSE 142: Bontan Interview

This week on the show, I am excited to have rising UK talent, Bontan on the show. Bontan has had a string of releases on top tier such as Hot Creations, 20/20 Vision, Elrow and Circus. Hailing from North England, I first found Bontan's music after his massive collab with Josh Butler, "Call you Back." Since then I have had my eye on his music, and his productions continually exceed expectation. In fact, one of the biggest tracks played at the last Dirtybird Campout West, was his track "You Don't Know," out on Circus Recordings. This week Bontan has put together a finely tuned guest mix for THE BIRDHOUSE, read on to check out his mix and Birdhouse questionnaire.

THE REAL

How did your music career get started in earnest?

I had been producing for quite some time and one of my tracks finally got picked up by Pleasurekraft for there label. Since then, I gained more interest from other labels.

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

I grew up in Liverpool. It had a massive influence on my career, Events like Circus & Chibuku were regular occurrences for me as a teen.

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?

It crossed my mind a few times when I was going through low points, but never enough for me to actually want to quit. I love it too much!

What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

Probably the Arturia collection. Before I had my hardware, that was my go to synths for all my sounds.

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?

I can honestly say I actively tried to not sound like anyone else. I knew from the get go that originality was the thing that would get me noticed. I just tried to make solid house music but with my own spin. I was obsessed with Masters At Work though in terms of career. still on top of their game after all these years!

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

A long sleep and a pizza. that usually sorts me right out! I have a really supportive family so that helps a lot.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

Either behind the decks at any gig or chilling with my wife in the garden.

Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?

I finished second in the Merseyside Table Tennis championship when i was younger. That counts right?
