THE BIRDHOUSE 151: John Monkman Interview

BH151-John-Monkman.png

This week on THE BIRDHOUSE, I have something a bit different lined up for the show. Taking over the guest mix, we have all the way from London, John Monkman. I first caught wind of John when I saw him perform this year at Coachella. His live techno performance was really something special. John has had releases on some the world’s biggest and most cutting edge labels, including: Kompakt, Get Physical, Anjunadeep, Suara and Rebellion. His sound falls somewhere between melodic and driving to create a euphoric atmosphere. Check out John Monkman's guest mix below and read on for his BIRDHOUSE questionnaire.

THE REAL

How did your music career get started in earnest?

In 2007 I released an album under my other alias Flip-Flop with producer, and old pal, Christopher Hanson. We toured extensively  for quite a few years and is  when things really heated up. We slowed down touring the project around 2012 which gave me more time to focus on my solo productions.

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

I was born in California, however my mum moved to London when I was four and have lived here since. Influences have always come from the friends/people I meet/interact with, so yeah, living here has had a profound affect.

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?

Many times, the music industry is a tough nut to crack.

What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

Logic 4.

First Moog

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and career wise)?

In the early days, the likes of Aphex Twin & Plaid were big influencers. I wasn’t necessarily making music like them, but their sound design sucked me in. Martin Buttrich and Max Martin were always heroes on the production side of things.

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

It’s still not an exact science. If things aren’t flowing I’ve learned to leave the studio, go for a walk, meditate, or simply relocate to a new setting.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

When I’m eating Indian food on the beach in Goa…bliss
