Though he's been making music for years now, Berlin's Christoph S. – better known as Click | Click – really won me over with "Birdhain", the DJ Glen collab that dropped on Snatch! Records earlier this year. After digging deeper into his catalog, I found even more big tracks (on labels including Exploited, Cajual, OM and his own Kassette and Palms & Flamingos imprints) all of which have a funky house edge but are also influenced by the techno scene that dominate his city. Though almost all of his upcoming gigs are in his home country and throughout Europe, here's hoping that Christoph can play some shows across the pond soon.
Have a listen to Click | Click's guest mix (and some tunes from me!) on this week's episode of THE BIRDHOUSE, and scroll on to read his answers to the BH Questionnaire.
How did your music career get started in earnest?
Music was always my passion! As a teenager it was just for fun with my 'Post-Nirvana-grunge-punk-band' phase and organizing some parties and concerts at our local youth club. In 2002 I moved to Berlin and studied Audio Engineering, and in 2006 I launched my first label Kassette Records and started producing under the name Click | Click.
Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?
I [was] born in the south of Germany, but I moved to Berlin around 15 years ago. I think Berlin influenced me and my music a lot, but some colleagues say that my sound is more groovy and funky than the 'normal' German electronic music. I guess they are right. ;-)
When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?
In the beginning I was really into minimalistic and techy lables like M_nus, Dumb Unit, Sender, etc., but also the funky stuff of Foundsound and house music from labels like Perlon and Cadenza. My sound in 2006 was mostly rooted in minimal, that's why my name is Click | Click; over the years my sound has changed, but the name is still the same.
Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?
When I'm surrounded by nice people... family, friends and/or a good crowd on the dance floor.
