THE BIRDHOUSE 092: Christian Nielsen Interview

If not for the keen ear of my buddy Jesse Rose, the dance world might never have been introduced to Christian Nielsen. The Danish DJ/producer debuted on Play It Down in summer 2013, and has been keeping the tunes coming since, with releases on Circus, Toolroom, Suara, Defected and more. Check out his top-notch guest mix and read on to learn more about Nielsen as he tackles the Birdhouse Questionnaire.

How did your music career get started in earnest?

Well Jesse Rose is what happened. I signed a track to Play It Down back in 2013 ,and from there it was all about making the "right" decisions and making dope tracks.

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

I'm half Danish/half Malaysian, but born in Saudi Arabia because my dad worked there during the '80s. We then moved to Denmark in the early '90s and my family [has] been there ever since. But no, musically I have to admit that none of the places have been very influential. I do reckon moving around and being around different cultures made me more open-minded and accepting to whatever comes at me.

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?

Not really [ever]. There have been times where different things have affected how much time I could spend producing. I don't really see producing music as a career choice. I do it because I love doing it. If I ever choose that I don't want to DJ anymore or release music, I would still produce music on my little laptop.

What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

My MacBook. I would love to say something cool, but to be honest, everything started on the laptop and a little MIDI keyboard that I still use today.

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?

Musically it started with Kerri Chandler! His music still blows my mind! Later on it was everyone from Matthias Tanzmann to Jesse Rose, Ben Klock, Matrixxxman, Kolsch and Noir and you [Thanks dood! –CVS]. Generally speaking, I love getting inspired my everyone and everything.

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

I spend time with my girlfriend and our little boy who is almost three years old.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

When I'm with my family, producing or DJing.

Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?

I'm pretty bad ass with a yo-yo, I have a medal somewhere :) And badminton, lots of medals there too!
