THE BIRDHOUSE 129: Monki Interview


This week on the show, I am happy to welcome BBC Radio 1 tastemaker and an the all around incredible DJ Monki for a special hour long guest mix. Not only is Monki a talented DJ, she owns her own party brand and record label. Monki has released four collaboration EP's in association with Redbull called "Monki & Friends," which have seen tracks from the likes of Shadow Child, Melé, Kidnap Kid and more. Along with major nightclub and festival appearances, everywhere from Fabric to Hideout, Monki's eclectic taste makes her a standout talent on the DJ circuit. How did your music career get started in earnest?

My first job was for a local station playing music for over 40s, then I ended up at the then biggest pirate radio station in London; Rinse FM. It all kicked off from there really when I was 18. 

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

London. Yeah, London has a huge influence on my music, especially when I was growing up here, we're spoilt with dance music culture in the UK. 

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?


What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

I've only just started producing, before that I was an out n out DJ. But first drum machine I played on was Roland TR8.

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?

I listened to a lot of radio shows. I wouldn't try and emulate anyone in particular but did look up to a lot of the Radio 1 specialists here in the UK.

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

Go to the gym.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

Either behind the decks or on the football pitch.

Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?

I play for a football (Soccer) team. Have played since I was about 5.

I like all colours me.

Pinashe is a great word

Favorite animal?

I want to meet one of those quokka things in Australia. Fan of a Rhino though.
