THE BIRDHOUSE 177: Gettoblaster Interview

BH177-Gettoblaster.png

In America the two most important cities for house and techno are Chicago and Detroit, and the dastardly ghetto house duo known as Gettoblaster represent both. Together Paul Anthony and Zack Bletz combine the bouncing style of Chicago and the relentless grooves of Detroit to form a style all their own. When Zack and Paul aren’t producing or DJing together they’re running their own imprint, We Jack, where they tap legends like DJ Deeon alongside rising talents like Hatiras.

They recently put out a new track on Dirtybird with DJ Funk called “Get Dat” that’s been doing work on dance-floors for months now. As someone who came up in the Detroit scene, I always jump at the chance to sign artists who do Detroit justice. Looking forward to more releases from Gettoblaster in the future, but for now let’s enjoy their guest mix on the latest episode of THE BIRDHOUSE. Listen below, and don’t forget to look through their questionnaire as well!

THE REAL

How did your music career get started in earnest?

(Paul) Growing up in Chicago house music was on the radio, so most of us at a young age knew what house music was early on. So being from the south side of Chicago it was common to want to be a DJ. Turned it from a hobby to a career.

(Zach) While in college I was introduced to techno and house, with growing interest I went back to "Detroit" and was introduced to the warehouse scene, which was the beginning of my "career".

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

(Paul) Chicago. I was a big part of the late 90's " Warehouse / Rave " scene. Relief Records, Dance Mania, I.H.R. ruled the sound in that era... essentially tracky style house .. hence Gettoblaster.

(Zach) Detroit, which has an influence on what our sound is as well. As Detroit is known for techno.... So.....Take Chicago tracky house, Detroit tracky techno... twist it together.... and the Gettoblaster baby was born.

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career

(Paul) Every time I accepted payment for ghost writing for someone else.... but then I realized to take their money and buy some dope shoes... and walk proud in my new shoes, knowing my shit was on the radio even if it essentially wasn't me ..lol....

(Zach) I never really wanted to quit ever.

What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

(Paul) Akai MPC 2000

(Zach) Ableton Live

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and careerwise)?

(Paul) Mine was a mix of a few, DJ Sneak, Bad Boy Bill, Terry Mullan. If it wasn't for those guys... I would probably be DJing at weddings and proms....

(Zach) Stacey Pullen, Kevin Saunderson, John Acquaviva were a big influence on me early on as well as Bad Boy Bill & Paul Johnson.

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

(Paul) Eating healthy, working out, Listening to other music than my own, mixes, or totally different genre's, meditation, and lots of sex.

(Zach) Working out, and spending time with my partner on the road... nothing better than walking into a hotel room with this dude and he is pretty much down to his underwear within 30 seconds.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

(Paul) On Stage. Or vacation with my girl (preferably in a hot tub, somewhere tropical. Or at a really good sushi restaurant).

(Zach) On stage or spending time with my wife & friends.

Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?

(Paul) I teach basket weaving every Sunday I am off. I really like giving back to the community. I also really enjoy doing escape rooms. something about being lost or stuck reminds of the one time I did ketamine, and when I find my way out... it’s like the trip was finally over...

(Zach) I am the leader of a Pictionary club. I am really good at drawing and explaining myself through my drawings.
