THE BIRDHOUSE 203: Reset Robot

BH203 - RESET ROBOT - SQ.png

For episode 203, I am happy to welcome the techno maestro himself, Reset Robot, to the show. Hailing from Portsmouth, United Kingdom, Reset Robot has spend the better part of two decades fine tuning his production skills, and initially got his start with his first release in 2003. He popped up on my radar around 2010 - 2011 with huge releases on True Soul & Sci+Tec. Since then, Reset Robot has had major releases on releases on imprints like, Drumcode, Hot Flush, Knee Deep In Sound and More. His style goes everywhere from minimal to complex, heavy to melodic and everything in between, check out his guest mix below and read on for his BIRDHOUSE questionnaire.

THE REAL

How did your music career get started in earnest?

I got it started with a lot of dedication. I worked tirelessly on my production skills in my late teens and early twenties. I landed my first ever release back in 2003.

Where are you from and does it have an influence on your music?

I’m from Portsmouth (UK). I’m not sure it has an influence on my music but it’s a great place to live. We’re a stones throw from the beach so it’s fantastic in the summer.

How many times did you want to quit trying to make this your career?

It happens a lot. There are times when I just think “what the hell am I doing?” There are often moments, which are just around the corner that get you back on track. A few great sessions in the studio or an electric gig will do it.

What was one piece of equipment that helped define your sound early on?

I wasn’t using any hardware early on so I would have to say Reason. I started off using it and still use it to this day!!

When you were getting started, which artists did you try to emulate (both musically and career wise)?

I loved Josh Wink, Sasha and Digweed back then and still like what they do now. Anything by Josh Wink would be in the bag straight away. I loved the way his tracks used to build. Always loads of energy.

When you have a tough week or a rough tour, how do you get yourself back on track?

Normally spending time with the family or playing tennis. I love to get out and about and to be active.

Where and when are you at your most content/happiest?

At my parents house in South West France. It’s a beautiful part of the country and their house in the middle of nowhere so it’s easy to switch off properly.

Do you have any secret hobbies or hidden talents?

I love gardening and I’m pretty handy in the kitchen.
